'Church is not for people like me'

This is a common feeling but church is a welcoming place and like a big family. Naturally it can feel a bit strange going to a place where you don’t know anyone and you might wonder ‘what will happen?’ When you arrive you will find a warm welcome. Most people comment on how welcome they were made to feel and how they quickly felt at ease. It’s worth saying that we are very used to children and noise during a service! 

You will not be asked to do anything or be quizzed by anyone but we will do everything we can to help you feel at ease. You can sit and listen or you can join in – whatever you feel comfortable doing. People will naturally say ‘hello’ and seek to make sure you feel at home afterwards when we serve a cup of coffee. Equally you can leave as soon as you wish and don’t need to engage with anyone if you prefer that. We do hope though that you will find you want to stay on and get to know people.

If you are still concerned, think about this. Jesus reached out to everyone; he was completely inclusive. Religious people were shocked that he embraced ordinary people, children, those on the fringes of society, even lepers that others stayed away from, even a woman caught in the act of adultery. He embraced and valued everyone. When criticised and questioned ‘why’ he said ‘it’s not the healthy that need a doctor but those in need’ (Matthew 9:12). The church is probably the only group where the qualification for coming is the unworthiness of the member! Please don’t let anything stop you from coming and experiencing something of God and of his love for you. His love is unconditional.
